How to sign up for BetMGM Virginia sportsbook

If you are new to BetMGM, getting started only takes a few minutes. While you can access the sportsbook on a computer, the mobile apps are the ultimate in convenience. Download and install the app for your device using the link below.

That link will also set you up to take advantage of BetMGM’s welcome offer. You’ll need to finish your account registration first, however. To do that, BetMGM needs to get all of the following from you:

  • Date of birth
  • Email address
  • Last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Mailing address

You don’t have to be a VA resident or even in Virginia when you register. Once the sportsbook verifies your eligibility, the next step is to fund your account. You can do that in a lot of different ways, including using:

  • ACH payments from a checking or savings account
  • Credit/debit cards
  • PayNearMe
  • E-wallets like PayPal

To be eligible for the risk-free first bet, you must deposit at least $10. At this point, you’re ready to browse the markets and place your first wager. If it loses, BetMGM will give you free bet(s), equal to the amount of your first wager. If you deposit $100 and bet $50, that losing bet will result in $50 promo dollars for a new bet. BetMGM will match the bet up to $600.

There are some terms you need to be aware of with this promotion. If your first bet loses and it was over $50, you’ll receive five free bets that collectively add up to the value of your first wager. In other words, each bet is for the amount equal to 20% of your original wager. For example, if you lost a $50 bet, you’d get five $10 free wagers. Lost primary bets of $49 or less will be refunded in one shot.

You will have to use your free bet(s) within seven days, or it/they will expire. Also, if you place a winning wager using a free bet, your payout will only include the profit, not the promotional value. Now that you’re aware of what BetMGM’s offering in VA, it’s time to size up the sportsbook’s prospects in Old Dominion.

Can BetMGM become the king of the jungle in Virginia?

The short answer to this is, yes, it does stand a decent chance of becoming the dominant online sportsbook in VA. That’s because the “head start” that DraftKings and FanDuel enjoy in other jurisdictions isn’t a factor in Virginia.

The advantage that DraftKings and FanDuel took advantage of elsewhere is all about daily fantasy sports games. In places like Illinois and Indiana, all the people who played DFS with both of those companies became instant potential sports bettors when the books went live there.

In VA, however, DraftKings and FanDuel passed on accepting DFS entries because of the legal status of those offerings. Therefore, they’re starting out on a more level footing with BetMGM this time. Moreover, MGM has a bank of emails for the region thanks to its MGM National Harbor property. BetMGM getting live now, just a few days after DraftKings and less than a week after FanDuel, is important as well.

“We’re ecstatic that BetMGM is one of the first mobile sports betting platforms to launch in Virginia,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. “Virginians are passionate sports fans, and we’re thrilled to provide them a user-friendly sports betting experience. BetMGM Virginia customers can earn benefits and will soon enjoy innovative experiences planned with MGM National Harbor in Maryland and the Washington Nationals.”

The experience that Greenblatt referenced is a retail sportsbook at Nationals Park. While it’s uncertain exactly when that will be among the live amenities at the stadium on Nationals game days, the sportsbook has committed to opening the doors there during the 2021 season.

In other pertinent ways, BetMGM seems poised to compete. It has a competitive product and isn’t shy about spending on promotions to get new customers. This $600 welcome offer is just the first of many that BetMGM Virginia customers will enjoy over the coming years.
