Betfred Virginia Sportsbook may already be in the palm of your hand — and soon it will be on the back of jerseys, according to a Feb. 1 announcement.
The gaming company accepted its first Virginia sports bets on Dec. 19, but it kept a low profile until an update on Wednesday. They’re now fully ready for Virginia Super Bowl bets and beyond.
Virginia now has 15 sportsbooks to choose from
Virginia sports betting legislation caps the state’s “at-large” sportsbook license count at 12. But, there are exceptions. Additional Virginia online sportsbooks can get a license if:
- they partner with a Virginia casino
- or use one of two licenses available to pro sports partnerships. Franchises outside of state lines must meet certain Virginia employment guidelines to be eligible.
FanDuel VA is live through its partnership with the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field, for example. Betfred just secured the second spot.
The company’s USA Sports COO Bryan Bennett said he is looking forward to the partnership with Loudoun United.
“This is the ideal time to launch sports betting with several major sporting events happening over the coming weeks and months, and of course with the USL Championship season kicking off soon.”
Betfred will have space on the back of Loudoun United FC jerseys starting with the 2023 USL Championship Season.
Loudoun United plays in the United Soccer League, which dates back to 2011. ESPN platforms stream the league matches. Meanwhile, Loudoun United FC plays at Segra Field in Leesburg, VA near Washington DC. And, LUFC has a direct affiliation with the DC United MLS franchise. Doug Raftery is the team’s executive business officer.
“You can expect to see a prominent presence from Betfred at home games and various online club channels. We look forward to a fantastic 2023 season and helping to scale our business together.”
Betfred Virginia Sportsbook has UK roots
Virginia becomes the ninth state to add Betfred Sportsbook as a betting option.
Fred and Peter Done founded Betfred in 1967. The company is based Warrington, UK, so the Virginia soccer tie-in is a natural fit. It’s a very strong brand in the UK with more than 1,400 betting shops.
The company set up its US operations in 2019. Eight states offered Betfred Sportsbook as an option before it arrived in Virginia at the end of 2022:
- Iowa
- Pennsylvania
- Colorado
- Louisiana
- Arizona
- Washington
- Maryland
- and Ohio.
Virginia became the company’s ninth state with the soft launch on Dec. 19. Then, Nevada followed about a month later as Betfred’s 10th state.
