What to know about Liberty

Liberty got off to a red-hot start in 2022, winning eight of its first nine games. Its lone loss during that stretch came in a one-point defeat on the road to Wake Forest. They even made a cameo appearance in the AP top 25.

Since then, it hasn’t been smooth sailing. The Flames dropped their final three games of the year to UConn, Virginia Tech and New Mexico State. Two of those games came down to the wire; Liberty lost by three to UConn and by one to Virginia Tech.

Toledo (8-5) shared the MAC West Division title with Eastern Michigan. They added the MAC Championship on Saturday with a 17-7 win over the East Division’s champion, Ohio.

Hugh Freeze won’t coach Liberty in its bowl game

The former Flames coach recently accepted an offer from Auburn to be its new head coach. Upon his departure, Liberty named co-defensive coordinator and linebacker coach Josh Aldridge as its interim head coach. Aldridge will be the coach for the Boca Roton Bowl.

“Really impressed with Josh,” Liberty Director of Athletics Ian McCaw said. “I think he’s going to serve us extremely well during this interim period and through the bowl game.”

Aldridge will still coach the bowl game, despite Liberty officially hiring its new head coach in Jamey Chadwell. Chadwell inked a seven-year deal with the Flames after five seasons with Coastal Carolina. The new Liberty coach posted a 39-22 record at his former school.
