VA lottery winner cash 5

Another Virginia Lottery drawing, another multi-jackpot winner who purchased identical tickets and won big.

The  VA Lottery recently announced that a Chesapeake man won its Cash 5 drawing on Sept. 17.

Not only did he match all five numbers, he did so seven times. All of the tickets became winners after he matched 2-6-11-13-18 with the identical tickets.

He continued the recent trend of Virginia Lottery players winning big by playing the same numbers multiple times in the same drawing.

Cash 5 haul of $700,000

Alphonso Griffin purchased his winning Cash 5 tickets at a Speedway in Portsmouth.

Cash 5 is an in-state draw game in Virginia with twice-daily drawings. Players must choose five numbers from a pool of 34. Tickets range from 25 cents to $1 (though the total purchase price must equal at least $1).

On a $1 play, payouts range from $5 for matching three numbers (1 in 69 chance) to $100 for matching four (1 in 1,919) to the $100,000 grand prize for matching all five (1 in 278,256).

Griffin, who said he always play his favorite numbers, purchased seven winning tickets with those digits. Therefore, he scored a total of $700,000.

So what’s he going to do with the winnings – nearly a quarter-of-a-million-dollars in all?

Griffin told lottery officials he simply plans to pay bills and help family members with his windfall.

Seriously, what’s happening in Virginia?

The $700,000 score is another chapter in Virginia’s seemingly unfathomable lottery lore.

After all, 2020 has seen some downright baffling wins.

Griffin isn’t even the only multi-time Cash 5 winner in the past month. A player from the Virginia town of Vienna won a Cash 5 draw on Sept. 12 for $200,000. He purchased two identical Cash 5 tickets and won on both of them.

And don’t even get us started on the Pick 4 madness.

As we wrote back in September, a pair of Pick 4 victors weren’t content with the $5,000 top-prize jackpot. Instead, they each pressed their luck and purchased multiple tickets.

The result? One player won the Pick 4 a total of 20 times for a $100,000 payday. A few weeks later, another Pick 4 winner won $125,000 after purchasing 25 winning tickets.

Cash 5 and Pick 4 strategy?

As enviable as those multi-jackpot victories might be, it’s worth keeping in mind that there really isn’t a strategy to lottery draw games.

It’s purely, unequivocally luck of the draw.

Whether you purchase one ticket or 100, your odds of winning on each ticket remain the same. As for the Cash 5 game, you have a 1 in 278,256 chance of matching all five numbers and winning $100,000.

No matter which numbers popped up in previous drawings and regardless of how you put together your play slip, the odds of winning remain the same with each ticket purchased.

However, as we’ve seen with the Cash 5 and Pick 4 multi-jackpot winners, you can up your total payout by purchasing multiple tickets in the (very, very) rare chance you win. However, if your goal is to win a jackpot – and not many jackpots – you might want to consider playing different number combinations if you’re buying multiple tickets.
