Bally Bet Halts Virginia Sports Betting App

Bally Bet has temporarily shut down its sports betting app in Virginia.

UPDATE (Aug. 30, 2023): Bally Bet has relaunched its sports betting app on a new platform.

After months of issues in all states it operates in, Bally Bet is taking one step backwards in hopes of taking some steps forward.

The step backward is the app run by Bally’s Corporation has been shut down. The same is happening in Iowa, New York and Indiana. Bally Bet in Arizona will continue to operate as normal.

Steps forward are partnering with Kambi and White Hat Gaming with multi-year deals. White Hat Gaming develops online platforms, while Kambi is recognized as a leader in sports betting technology and oddsmaking services.

All Bally Bet users in Virginia must withdraw any funds from the app by June 30.

Where can Bally Bet users place wagers after deactivation?

Bally Bet is one of 15 active sportsbooks in Virginia. Players who are losing Bally Bet have many Virginia sports betting apps to turn to. Three sportsbooks have dominated the Virginia sports betting market: FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM. Those three titans and many other mobile sportsbooks boast some of the best sportsbook bonuses in Virginia.

In what appears to be an admission that acquiring Bet.Works in 2021 was a mistake, Bally Bet is now retooling its systems with the hopes of returning to Virginia by football season.

In many of the states Bally Bet operates in, likely including Virginia, it is far behind its competition.

Virginia does not announce its gaming revenue by individual sportsbook, but it is safe to say Bally Bet VA is struggling. In other states where Bally Bet operates, the app is well behind its competition.

In Iowa, for example, Bally Bet had just over $7,000 in total internet handle in May. To make matters worse for the sportsbook, the $7,000 or so wagered led to about $7,500 in winnings. That means Bally Bet actually lost about $500 in May, bringing its 2023 fiscal year total to around negative $50,000.

Bally Bet is deactivating in Virginia to bring Kambi and White Hat Gaming into the picture to re-stimulate its sports wagering services. Once Bally Bet returns, it hopes to have a better performing online product.

Details of the shutdown in Virginia

All balances in Virginia must be withdrawn by June 30. After that date, users will lose access to their accounts.

Any remaining balance will be mailed to their listed address and paid via physical check.

While no return date has been announced, Bally Bet noted on its website that it will return soon.

“We are already working hard behind the scenes on the new Bally Bet. As soon as we are back, we will be in touch.”
